THE Ayurveda considers weight gain to be a kapha (overabundance of water and earth) disorder with weak digestive fire. The food consumed is not digested, leading to the formation of toxins in the body. As a result, most of it is stored as fat, which leads to weight gain.
Dr. Deepa Apte examines the issue of weight gain as per Ayurvedic treatment and suggests solutions on how it can be managed
Herbs:
- Chyawanprash, an Ayurvedic dietary supplement containing 46 herbs, is highly recommended in Ayurveda. Just mix in 1 spoon of chyawanprash in a cup hot water and consume it 2-3 times during the day.
- Triphala, an Ayurvedic herbal combination, helps eliminate toxins and excess fat from the body.
- Guggulu is a resin widely used in Ayurveda and is considered an excellent herb for clearing toxins and fats from the digestive system to allow for proper digestion, absorption and assimilation of nutrients.
Foods:
- Avoid food intake during Kapha periods which are between 6:00am and 10:00am and 6:00pm & 10:00pm. Either avoid food altogether during these hours or avoid cold, heavy sweet foods during this time of day.
- Consume about 1.5 liters of water daily. You should also remember that this water must be warm. The ideal is to drink plain warm / hot water.
- Prefer hot spices like cumin, coriander, cardamom, fennel, fenugreek, turmeric, cinnamon, ginger, etc. Feel free to add spices to your food. Drink
- te copious decoctions, especially ginger and tea with lemon. You should always finish your meal by drinking a cup of ginger and lemon tea 10 minutes later. This helps to enhance the digestion process and prevents the metabolism from slowing down.
- Focus on tastes like spicy, bitter and astringent that improve metabolism and avoid sweet, sour and salty tastes.
Yoga:
- Make sure to move as much as possible. It takes more than 40 minutes of movement to keep your circulation, bones, muscle joints etc in good condition and keep you active and always in shape.
- Do at least 6 sun salutations daily and then practice poses like warrior, half moon, camel, bow, tree, dancer and chair which are very beneficial for weight control.
- Practice the postures with breathing exercises such as cleansing breath, fire breath, right nostril breathing.
Massage:
- Udvartana is a dry massage treatment with dry herbal powders and a little oil that aims to get rid of excess toxins and fat and helps fight cellulite and obesity.
- Ayurvedic abdominal massage is a non-invasive abdominal massage technique that aims to stimulate the abdominal organs and aid in weight loss around the stomach area.
It is important to remember that:
- You should not try to lose weight too quickly. It takes persistence, patience and consistency to get a good result – and you're much more likely to stick to a plan that way!
- If you are also suffering from other conditions apart from your tendency to gain weight, please consult a professional specialist in Ayurvedic treatment.
