Swimming instructions for expectant mothers

Is swimming safe during pregnancy?

If you follow our instructions, swimming during pregnancy will become a completely safe affair. Consult your doctor if you have any questions. There is no reason to stop enjoying swimming once you become pregnant, despite the myths. Here are some tips to help you swim safely.

Gradual Benefits of Swimming During Pregnancy

  • First Stages of Pregnancy:
In the early stages, all types of swimming are suitable and safe for pregnant women. Enjoy swimming without fear.
  • Last Stages of Pregnancy:
In the later stages of pregnancy, front swimming is often the most beneficial. It helps with correct posture and strengthens the back and chest muscles.

Risks and Avoidances

  • Breaststroke:
Although beneficial, be careful with forward movements to avoid overextending the back. Avoid overstretching the ligaments.
  • Freestyle Swimming:
Backstroke is not always ideal in the third trimester, as the weight of the baby can put pressure on the central blood vessels, creating discomfort.
  • Quick Turns and Dives:
Avoid rapid turns or platform dives, as these can aggravate GERD, especially in the third trimester.

Tips for Safe Swimming

  • Aerobic Exercise:
You can do good aerobic exercise, but avoid overexertion. Monitor your heart rate to ensure you don't push your limits.
  • Nutrition and Hydration:
Remember to eat well and drink plenty of fluids, especially if you're exercising for more than 30 minutes. Glucose may be helpful in preventing dizziness or fatigue.

Danger Signs: When to Stop

  • Symptoms to Look Out for:
If you experience fainting, dizziness, difficulty breathing, abdominal pain, bleeding or fluid loss, stop swimming immediately and consult your doctor.

Contraindications for Swimming During Pregnancy

Swimming is not recommended for women with a history of:

  • Multiple miscarriages
  • Membrane rupture
  • Premature labor
  • Significant cardiac or pulmonary problems
