Longevity Secrets – How to be healthy into old age

By observing certain peoples and especially regions around the world where a large number of residents exceed 90 or even 100 years, we can draw useful information and secrets of longevity.

In recent years, scientists have put the microscope on certain areas – which have been called “blue zones” – in which a large proportion of residents often live to be 100 years old.

Among these regions, Ikaria also appears, known for the relaxation of its inhabitants.

The five places in the world that are included in the regions with the highest rates of longevity, besides Ikaria, are Sardinia, Okinawa (Japan), the Nicoya Peninsula (Costa Rica), and the village of Loma Linda in California.

Secrets of longevity

In these places, residents follow – as reflected in years of research – some common points in their lifestyles that help them stay healthy into old age.

The scientists also concluded that the inhabitants of these areas turned their backs on nutritional supplements and vitamins - something that is often done in big cities around the world - while they generously consumed what nature offered them.

It is indicative that in these five distinct parts of the world the diet consists mainly of whole grains, legumes, vegetables and fish.

What research has shown about nutrition that contributes to longevity   

The scientists' conclusions showed that the inhabitants in these areas eat little meat, enough fish, such as sardines and cod, as well as a lot of fruits and vegetables. In particular, the inhabitants of these five regions have the following common nutritional characteristics:

  • They eat some meat, mostly as an accompaniment to some dishes which comes from animals that graze freely in the countryside.
  • They eat small amounts of fish almost daily and prefer more sardines and cod because they are not exposed to high levels of mercury or other chemicals
  • Fruits, vegetables and legumes are in their everyday life, while olive oil, especially in Ikaria, is found in almost all foods.
