Immersed in loneliness, the Greeks - "Champions" in Europe

Immersed in loneliness, the Greeks

The contemporary way of life, the frenetic rhythms of everyday life, the alienation in which entire societies are immersed has... knocked on the door of Greece as well.

And he hasn't just hit her our door, but the Greeks have emerged 'champions' in loneliness across Europe.

A new study by the European Commission's Joint Research Center captured the harsh reality.

Immersed in loneliness, the Greeks

One in ten Greeks often feel lonely, while more than four in ten (specifically 43%) meet with their family or friends at most once a month.

It seems that the close family ties that existed in the past have been irretrievably lost for too many Greeks.

According to the same study, Greece has one of the highest rates in Europe both in terms of people's subjective feeling of loneliness, and the more objective state of social isolation, assessed based on the frequency of family and friend contacts.

Loneliness

The data shows that 7% of the European Union population feel lonely very often. Apart from Greece where the rate reaches 10%, the picture is similar in other countries, such as Italy, France and Poland.

In countries such as the Netherlands, Denmark and Finland, the percentage drops to close to 3 with 4%.

Who are most at risk?

Researchers are "ringing" a bell for a series of social groups that are most at risk. These include those facing the scourge of unemployment, the poor as well as people facing serious health problems.

Risk of premature death

The study points out that lonely people are often stigmatized, have worse health, more psychological problems and worst of all, loneliness, if not treated in time, can be associated with an increased risk of premature death.
