Marathon distances: Are you overestimating your strength?

Yesterday's original marathon belongs to history. Thousands of runners from Greece and abroad – for some a lifelong dream – managed to finish in Kallimarmaro. Marathon distances

Regardless of one's performance, just finishing a marathon, whether running, swimming or cycling is a feat in itself.

Marathon distances

Marathon distances, however, require many months of training and proper nutrition.

If the two parameters are not combined, then it is possible that would-be marathon runners will find themselves in front of unpleasant surprises.

If they have even ignored some signs with their health, then the results can be painful.

First aid

In yesterday's marathon, dozens of runners were given first aid by EKAV crews (provision of oxygen, ice and spray for bruises), while two runners aged close to 50 faced a more serious problem as they were taken to hospitals with a heart attack.

If in a marathon distance the athlete – amateur or professional – presents a breathing problem, then there are two versions. Either he hadn't prepared enough or he ran at a faster pace than he should have.

Insufficient preparation

It is not rare that runners who take part in the marathon, swimmers who compete in the open sea in distances of 5, 8 or even 10 kilometers have not prepared sufficiently.

When they face the race with time as their first goal and not their health, then the results will be what we saw yesterday.

Obviously it is not possible for someone to run a marathon if the longest distance they have ever covered in training is 10km.

Many times runners, and not only those aiming for marathon distances, come up with training programs on their own, without knowing the basic training protocols.

Ask the experts

Without knowing about the training zones and how long we should practice in them. They do the same with nutrition. They read things on the internet from ignorant people and think that with a gel in their shorts they will have the energy they need.

We don't play with marathon distances. They require proper preparation based on training protocols as well as nutrition which should be followed and adapted according to the conditions not only on the day or a few days before the competition but throughout the preparation.
