Risks of medical aesthetics. It is a fact that the operations of Medical Aesthetics, both worldwide and in Greece, have an increasingly increasing demand from consumers (they are not patients), but at the same time a greater special offer from the doctors but mainly the adventurers who infest the area.
For this reason it is very important the consumer is validly informed for the application he is interested in but even more important is to correctly choose the doctor who will implement the service he wants.
So, as Medical Aesthetics defined as the set of medical procedures (surgical and non-surgical) in order to improve the health, beauty and youth of the body, face and skin. The specialties that have been dealing with the field of Medical Aesthetics since ancient times are Dermatology and Plastic Surgery. In Greece, in recent years, the phenomenon of intrusion into this area by doctors of other specialties has been observed, such as:

Entrepreneurs who advertise in the media the services they provide often below cost or even by offering impossible results in order to attract naive customers to their premises.
So today, more than ever before, it is necessary for the mass media to responsibly inform the consumer about the actions (and their results) related to Medical Aesthetics, in the context of Medical Ethics, and performed by doctors who have studied this subject. That is, ideally by Dermatologists - Venereologists and Plastic Surgeons.
Risks of medical aesthetics
At the same time, the consumer must know the conditions for the correct application of high level Medical Aesthetics services.
These are:
- To be preceded by a clinical examination and evaluation of the problem by the doctor.
- Full information is necessary and the choice of treatment must be a joint decision of both (doctor and consumer). Incomplete and false information is an important warning that something is wrong!
Patient and therapist expectations should always be realistic.
- Cultivating excessive expectations always troubles you!
- Consumer to know from the beginning the status of a healer.
- Is he a doctor? If so, is it skilled or unskilled? For the paramedical professions (aesthetic pharmacists, nurses, etc.) we do not discuss it. Those who practice such acts are illegal!
-Education / Certification: Is he a Dermatologist - Venereologist or a Plastic Surgeon? If not, where was he trained? Because only in these two specialties is Medical Aesthetics taught. Would you call an electrician for a plumbing problem? If the healers have other certifications in addition to their basic training, even better!
Education + Skill + Experience = Effectiveness. Therefore, in addition to education, the ability and experience of the therapist is equally important. Ask for photos (before and after treatment) of corresponding incidents.
-What materials do they use?
Are the products certified? (CE, ISO, etc., country of origin), (botox, hyaluronic acid, hydroxyapatite, injectable threads, mesotherapeutic materials, etc.). Ask them to open them in front of you.
-The devices: In which country are they made? In China, America, Europe or Korea? They are certified (CE, ISO etc., country of origin, service). Always ask to be informed of the type and origin of the device they will be using.
- The place where these actions are carried out is important! Is it a doctor's office or a room in a beauty salon? What are the application conditions? Are they applied in a narrow room without good lighting? Are the rules of antisepsis followed?
-The attending physician should adhere to medical ethics. To justify the therapeutic approach he proposes to you and its cost.
According to complaints made to the Professional Association of Greek Dermatologists and Venereologists there are cases of fraud such as:
Impersonator: An esthetician, he presented himself to unsuspecting consumers under the real name of a Dermatologist and practiced illegal medical procedures. The case has taken the legal route.
Substitution of the agreed products during their application: Specifically, a different brand of hyaluronic acid was used.
The complainant (also a non-physician) used the casing of a well-known brand of hyaluronic acid and inserted another one of unknown origin. Most products are packed with gelatin. Ask them to be unsealed before you!
Multiple Debit and Credit Card Billing:
A case is pending in the courts of a beauty center that charged the cards of unsuspecting customers with thousands of euros for services costing three hundred and five hundred euros! Every day, we receive many complaints about mediocre to unsuccessful results or very short duration. Almost all mention that they chose the specific places and therapists because of low costs.
It is understandable that the economic crisis, the involvement in the field of Medical Aesthetics by many doctors (medical examiners, ophthalmologists, heart surgeons, dentists, etc.) as well as paramedical professions (estheticians, pharmacists, nurses, etc.) results in the increased supply and decreased demand. This fact has led several providers of these services to competitive bidding, especially on the internet.
