Stopping exercise even for a few days has health implications

We all know that the benefits of exercise in health us are multiple and that stopping any activity for long periods of time can cause quite a few problems. Stopping exercise

What we didn't know is that the effects on our health start to appear already in the first days of stopping physical activity.

A new study shows that stopping physical activity even for short periods accelerates the harmful effects on health.

In the scientific journal Diabetologia, a study was presented according to which the sedentary behavior of non-obese young people affects their physical condition, increases waist circumference and the accumulation of fat in the liver.

Stopping exercise

At the same time, it seems to affect insulin resistance and lead to a decline in endothelial function, a common sign - as the researchers report - of the development of cardiovascular diseases.

The results of the research

A sedentary lifestyle has been blamed for a range of health effects, including diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

The new element that the research brings, however, is that the harmful effects of a sedentary life begin to appear after the first 14 days from the cessation of exercise.

Data

The researchers, led by Dr Kelly Bowden Davies, from the University of Newcastle and the University of Liverpool in Britain, collected data from 28 people (18 women and 10 men) who exercised regularly (more than 10,000 steps a day), with average age 32 years and average BMI (Body Mass Index) 24.3 (within normal limits).

Two weeks after cessation of exercise, there was a drop in good cardiovascular function by 1.8% in the first 14 days of inactivity, although previous levels of this function returned after 14 days of regular exercise.

Fat gain

At the same time, levels of total body fat, waist circumference, liver fat, fitness, and insulin sensitivity were less well after this period of exercise cessation, but returned to previous levels after resuming activity.

This particular study highlights the need for public health officials to publicize the effects of a sedentary lifestyle.

Any daily change in our physical activity has consequences for our health, whether positive or negative.

Say yes to exercise

All doctors around the world explain to their patients the benefits of exercise. Many have even begun to "prescribe" physical activity in order to prevent various diseases.
