This myth has been perpetuated for many years without being supported by research as a result of which we see people aged 60 and over preferring… coffee shops to gentle exercise.

"Shield" for heart disease and stroke

The results of a study recently published in the scientific journal "European Heart Journal', showed that those who exercised less as they got older had a greater risk of developing heart disease by 27%.

Conversely, those who exercised more reduced their risk by 11%.

The most encouraging conclusion of the research is that the benefits of physical exercise at ages 60 and over apply even to people with chronic health problems such as hypertension, high cholesterol, type 2 diabetes.

Survey of over 1 million people

Researchers conducted the study on more than one million men and women aged 60 and over who underwent two check-ups in 2009-2010 and 2011-2012.

The participants were followed by the researchers for the next five years, namely until December 2016.

What physical activity levels showed for their health

Throughout the study, the researchers assessed the average level of physical activity per week and how this changed between the two intervals in which the participants were tested.

The researchers also collected data on heart disease and stroke from January 2013 to December 2016.

The mean age of the participants was 67 years and 47% of these were men.

Exercise after 60

About two-thirds of them, according to APE, reported that they were not physically active in both the first and second examination periods.

The percentage of women who did not exercise was even higher than that of men in both time periods of the study.

During the total follow-up period of the participants, 114,856 events of heart disease and stroke were recorded.

Improving health

The researchers found that people who changed their level of physical activity from no physical activity at all in 2009-2010 to moderate or vigorous physical activity three or four times a week in 2011-2012 had a 11% reduction in the risk of cardiovascular problems.

Those who exercised moderately or vigorously once or twice a week reduced their risk by 10% if they increased their physical activity to five or more times a week.

On the other hand, those who exercised moderately or vigorously more than five times a week at the first screening and stopped exercising at the second increased their likelihood of developing cardiovascular problems by 27%.

Beneficial effects also on people with health problems

When the researchers looked specifically at a sample of people with chronic diseases they found that those who started exercising at a moderate or vigorous intensity three or four times a week while not exercising before had a reduced risk of cardiovascular problems.
