      Pilates

Pilates is a method of body exercise, which originated from the Contrology technique of Joseph H. Pilates. Pilates himself described his method as "the art of harmonized body-spirit-soul through natural movements and with strict control of the will".

A few well-planned movements, done in a balanced sequence, form the exercises of the method, which are designed to exercise all the motor muscles of man. The method is a combination of Eastern and Western approaches to exercise. It approaches movement with an emphasis on muscle tone and strength as much as flexibility and self-centeredness.

Pilates focuses on strengthening the core of the body (abdomen, hips, and lower back) so that the practitioner obtains a stable center of support, while relaxing tension in the extremities.

The Bodycentric in Athens offers the following programs: individual, group and mat

      Joseph Hubertus Pilates

JHPilates was born in Germany in 1880. As a child he suffered from asthma, rickets and rheumatic fever. Reasons that led him to invent a method of rehabilitation initially for himself. In 1912 he went to England where he taught self-defense to Scotland Yard police officers.

Two years later, in 1914, he was confined to a camp and there he developed his method, with the result that his fellow prisoners were spared the 1918 flu epidemic that killed thousands in Britain alone. After the end of the war he returns to Germany where he collaborates with all the dance pioneers of that time such as Rudolf Von Laban and works as an instructor for the Hamburg police force.

In 1923 he went to New York where he built his own studio together with his wife Clara. He died aged 87 in 1967.

      Gyrotonic® & Gyrokinesis®

      • Gyrotonic Expansion System®

The Gyrotonic® is a new exercise system that uses its principles Gyrokinesis® as a base to exercise the body and mobilize the joints. Its uniqueness is that it strengthens and stretches the body with minimal effort, while simultaneously increasing the range of motion in the joints and improving coordination. This system is served by a series of specially designed machines that were built with the human body in mind and with respect for absolute freedom of movement.

His machines Gyrotonic® they move more than one joint at the same time without compressing them, thus strengthening the joints. The sequences of movements are natural, uninterrupted and create continuity between contractions and stretches through rotational movements of the joints, so that the skeleton gains a balanced support.

The exercises are done with a spherical awareness and a circularity of movement and help the practitioner to work out with constant supervision, variety in controlled resistance and truly athletic stimulation without any speed limitation. The Gyrotonic® addressed to movement professionals (athletes, dancers), to people of all ages, whether they are healthy or in recovery from an injury.

      • Gyrokinesis ® (The Essential of Body Kinetics)

The Gyrokinesis® is the core of Julius Horvath's methodology. In it there is a combination of many basic principles and movements of yoga, dance, gymnastics and Tai Chi. This system works the body through 7 natural movements of the spine: bending forward, backward, sideways right and left, also spiral movement to the right and left as well as a circular movement. The key to the method is fluidity.

The method is designed to systematically but gently move all the joints and muscles with rhythmic and wavy movements giving the feeling of dancing. The movement activates the internal organs of the body and the corresponding breathing that follows each exercise completes the movement. Stops are not held for a long time. The beginner's classes start with simple breathing instructions and a massage that everyone does on themselves, so that the body activates smoothly.

The next point the exercises focus on is the spine and pelvis. Sitting in chairs, practitioners mobilize the spine through a series of movements that extend to release the hips, knees, biceps, and so on. in every possible direction. The corresponding sequence in breathing stimulates the nervous system and oxygenates the blood.

In the more advanced classes, endurance exercises are added so that the body is prepared to face more tiring activities. Classes are held in a sitting and standing position, as well as on mattresses.
