Cuticles on the nails, those annoying and unsightly cuticles, no matter how much we want to get rid of them and cut them, they always "come back". And there is a reason.
Because the cuticle is the nail's natural shield, according to Dana Stern, dermatologist and nail specialist. As it states, the cuticle prevents water, moisture and organisms from entering the nail.
"The cuticle is located above the most important part of the nail, the 'womb' of the nail. Any trauma in the area of the cuticles (cutting, biting, pulling) can affect the "uterus" and ultimately can affect the appearance of the nail (discoloration, lines, etc.)" he explains.
Hollywood celebrity manicurist Deborah Lippmann adds: "With skin being the largest organ on your body, cuticles are the last line of defense as a protective barrier, blocking the spread of bacteria within the nail."
When bacteria enter the nail through the cuticle, Stern says this scenario results in a red, light infection called acute paronychia. The dermatologist notes that these infections should be dried and treated by a doctor.
If moisture gets into the nail from an injured "barrier", the skin behind the cuticle will become red and swollen. This is known as chronic paronychia and the nail will eventually grow in an abnormal way if the nail remains this way.
What you can do, instead of cutting the cuticles, is to soak your hands in water and then, with the special tool manicure, push the cuticles back.
