Underwater dance artist and choreographer Julie Gautier presents her latest work in the world's deepest pool. At the AMA, Gautier gives her performance, dancing at the bottom for several minutes without taking a breath and then resurfacing.
AMA takes its name from the Japanese word for “woman of the sea” and is dedicated by the artist to all the women of the world. It was filmed in the Y-40 Deep Joy, the deepest pool in the world near Venice, Italy. The video is part of a larger project, which also includes the music video for Beyoncé’s song “Runnin” and an underwater film for a company called “Les Films Engloutis.” Gautier creates these videos with the help of her husband Guillaume Nery, who is a champion diver.

“AMA is a silent film. It tells a story that everyone can interpret in their own way, based on their own personal experiences,” says Gautier. “It doesn’t impose, it just suggests. I wanted to share the greatest pain in my life through this film. However, I didn’t want to present it bluntly, so I covered it with grace. And to make it not seem too heavy, I submerged it in water. I dedicate this film to all the women in the world.”
