Breast augmentation: A first on the beauty market

Breast augmentation: A first on the beauty market

Well-shaped, firm and rich are the breasts that women desire, but not all of them have. Science has provided for the less fortunate. With the help of plastic surgery, the breast is reshaped. The issue, of course, is that the result, in addition to being good, should also be safe.

The female breast is a timeless symbol of femininity and motherhood and occupies a special place in the culture and customs of the peoples of the Earth.
According to statistics, breast augmentation, which is one of the most popular aesthetic plastic surgery procedures and one of the most frequently requested procedures by Greek women, ranks first among the operations concerning the female breast. Breast augmentation is usually performed using silicone implants. In recent years, it has returned to the fore and the use of specially processed autologous fat is also applied. However, the safety, uniformity and duration of the effect of this method for cosmetic purposes remains to be proven.

Silicone Inserts: What I Need to Know

There are different types of silicone implants depending on their composition, size and shape, while the most commonly used today in breast augmentation are the latest technology cohesive gel silicone implants, which are elastic and similar in texture to the normal breast. Clinical studies from large centers in the US and Canada have shown that silicone implants do not cause any disease and do not statistically increase the likelihood of developing diseases such as breast cancer or autoimmune diseases. With the proper placement technique, they do not affect the woman's breastfeeding. Only the plastic surgeon knows the technical specifications of silicone inserts and therefore chooses inserts from companies that have received approval from the American FDA or similar European bodies. Companies with a long history of activity in the biotechnology sector are always preferred, always with patient safety in mind.

The candidates

Breast augmentation is indicated for any woman who wishes to increase her breasts, due to small size, congenital hypoplasia or aplasia of the breasts, or in women with a reduction in breast size after significant weight loss, or with loose and drooping breasts, in women after pregnancy or after menopause. In some cases breast augmentation alone is not enough to correct a sagging breast but may need to be combined with a mastopexy (lift) technique in order to achieve the ideal result.
The first visit to the plastic surgeon
The most specialist to contact a woman interested in breast augmentation is the certified plastic surgeon (member of the Hellenic Society of Plastic Surgery EEPEACH, www.hespras.gr). The patient discusses with the plastic surgeon the expectations and the desired result of the operation. In any case, these expectations should be realistic.
A detailed medical history is taken, including past surgeries. The options and parameters of the operation are thoroughly discussed, with particular emphasis on the appropriate choice of implants, based on the patient's desire, her somatometric characteristics and, of course, the experience of the surgeon. Both the postoperative course and the possible complications of the operation are explained in detail by the doctor.

The operation

Breast augmentation is an operation performed under general anesthesia and sometimes in combination with local anesthetic injection for post-operative analgesia and patient comfort. The surgical incision is usually made in the inframammary fold while other possible accesses are periammillary or axillary. The insert is placed in a cavity created by the surgeon either under the gland or under the muscle, or in a double plane (half under the muscle and half under the gland). The most common access is inframammary and is done through a small incision about 4 cm long, which is finally closed with absorbable sutures and the scar it leaves is invisible. The operation is performed in a clinic and the patient can leave after a few hours, or she can remain hospitalized overnight and be discharged the next morning.

The recovery

The patient usually wears drains on both breasts, which remain for 1-2 twenty-four hours and are then removed. Immediately after the surgery, she wears a special sports bra which she continues to wear for a few weeks. The patient may feel a feeling of tension in the breasts especially in the first 2 twenty-four hours, which is controlled with oral painkillers, while she may feel numbness in the breasts and nipples. This goes away over time and disappears completely after 2-3 months.
Edema (swelling), redness and bruising (bruises) are also observed immediately after surgery, which are expected and usually subside after a few days. The swelling in particular takes weeks to fully subside. After leaving the clinic, the patient receives antibiotic treatment and painkillers for a few days according to the instructions of the surgeon. He also receives detailed instructions for post-operative visits, wound care and recovery. The patient always receives from her surgeon a slip with the code of the implants used, which she keeps in her medical record. This clipping is the "identity" of her inserts.
The result is immediate and impressive, and the final result can be seen after 3-6 months.
