Fruits and vegetables are a source of vitamins, minerals and fiber and at the same time offer significant hydration to the body, which is essential especially in the hot summer months.
However, you should be aware that the significant amount of fiber and natural sugars present in some fruits and vegetables make them an unsuitable choice before the beach, as they cause bloating.
1. Artichoke
Artichoke contains oligosaccharides, a type of sugar that is not broken down by the enzymes produced by the human body. As a result, they reach the intestine intact, waiting to be broken down by the bacteria that live there. This process is responsible for the annoying bloating.
2. Carrot
Carrot is very nutritious, but when consumed in large quantities it causes bloating due to its high fiber content. One cup of raw carrots provides about 12 grams of carbohydrates, 4 of which are fiber. High-fiber vegetables cause bloating because gut bacteria produce gas when they break them down.
3. Broccoli
Cruciferous vegetables, such as broccoli and cabbage, are excellent sources of vitamin C, but they contain a complex sugar (raffinose) that is difficult for people with sensitive stomachs to break down.
4. Apple
Apple contains a significant amount of fuctose. Fructose is a simple sugar, meaning it is not broken down into smaller molecules in the body. If it does not penetrate the intestinal wall to pass into the blood, it is directed to the intestine and becomes food for the bacteria present there. This process, as in the case of the artichoke, is accompanied by the production of gases, thus bloating.
5. Blueberries
Blueberries, like all berries, are an excellent source of antioxidants, but the sugars they contain (polyols or polyalcohols) are only partially broken down by the small intestine. Their remains absorb water and are fermented by gut bacteria, causing gas and bloating.
6. Mango
The sweet exotic fruit contains mostly fructose and less glucose. This imbalance can lead to bloating and gas production.
