There is nothing more beautiful than a beautiful and sparkling smile. But how many have it? And what is the secret to healthy and beautiful teeth?
Many patients who come to my office wonder how it is that, while brushing and taking care of their teeth, they decay.
Many of them are sure that the "bad paste" of their teeth is to blame, which causes them to "break down by themselves". Others say that cigarettes are to blame, or that pregnancy "took all the calcium from their teeth".
The truth is that the cause of tooth decay is the microbes that accumulate in our mouths and the food residues that remain on the teeth after meals.
Therefore, the basic way to protect teeth is oral hygiene. Many times, I tell the patients who visit me: "I don't doubt that you brush, but it's about 'how' you brush!"
Because, many times, a hasty brushing of the teeth does nothing more than freshen our breath a little. Food remains remain between the teeth and microbes begin their destructive action.
Therefore, oral hygiene is more than the hasty brushing that many of us are used to.
Basic rules for oral health are the following:
- The dentist will show you how to brush so that they are cleaned properly. Do not hesitate to ask your dentist to show you the correct brushing method.
- The areas between the teeth, in order to be properly cleaned, need dental floss and interdental brushes, which your dentist will show you how to use.
- Topical fluorides are essential, especially for children. The dentist places a gel with fluoride on the teeth, which is absorbed and contributes to the resistance of the teeth against the attacks of microbes.
- Fluoride and antiseptic solutions help maintain oral health. Your dentist will indicate the solution that is suitable for you. Regular check-ups of the teeth and gums by your dentist are essential for maintaining good oral health and early treatment of potential problems.
- We all need to be aware that the mentality of "I only go to the dentist when I'm in pain" is destructive to oral health. When it hurts, it's too late!
