The habits of teenagers do not often include sports activity, as a result of which a large percentage of children are overweight from an early age.<\/p>\n

Research<\/h2>\n

The University Research Institute for Mental Health, Neurosciences and Precision Medicine (EPIPSY) in its latest survey that includes data from 2018 reports that only two out of five teenagers report that they did at least five days a week of "frequent" physical activity.<\/p>\n

That is, any activity of at least 60 minutes duration, which increases the heart rate and causes shortness of breath (eg vigorous walking to school, gymnastics at school, playing with friends, various sports).<\/p>\n

Why don't teenagers play sports in Greece<\/h3>\n

Disappointing facts<\/h3>\n

In fact, one in nine (11.7%) reported "low frequency" of physical activity, i.e. at most one day a week, while limited physical activity is reported by a higher percentage of girls, compared to boys, as well as older students , compared to the younger ones.<\/p>\n

Exercise is likely to decrease further as children approach national exams, as they focus their daily lives on preparing for university entrance.<\/p>\n

Financial crisis and exercise<\/h3>\n

According to the research findings, the economic status of the family seems to be linked to the frequency of physical activity of adolescents.<\/p>\n

In particular, children belonging to families with a low economic background seem to exercise less.<\/p>\n

Conversely, adolescents whose families appear to belong to a better economic situation report "frequent" physical activity (ie, at least 5 times a week) at a significantly higher rate (51.7%) compared to those whose families are placed in the middle (39.4%) or lower financial status (37.2%) status.<\/p>\n

Lack of infrastructure<\/h3>\n

Unfortunately in Greece even the natural activities for teenagers have to be paid for. The teenagers who took part in the survey reported (in percentage 30%) that there are no parks or open spaces near their home where they could play or do sports.<\/p>\n

Two out of five, in fact, answer that there are "no playgrounds or open fields at school where they can run", a fact that brings to the fore the perennial infrastructure problems in the country.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
